I marked my calendar, but I still lost track of time and Mini-Comics Day 2013 is on March 24th!

I don’t know what I’m going to do!  I have no earthly idea….wait, I’m having an idea.  Maybe I’ll actually be ready for Mini Comics Day.  Except, I did not get extra color ink for my printer.  Hmmm, have a day to fix that though.

Webcomic findings

‘Cause as many as I’ve found already is never enough.

Hemlock –  on smackjeeves.  beautiful, bold black and white style.

Curio  – a dreamworld.  completely amazing and terrifying in the way that really beautiful fish at the bottom of the ocean are terrifying.  great color work.

Prague Race – beautiful pencil work, or what looks like pencil work.  Can you ever tell now a days?  crazy detail backgrounds and environments.  completely enviable world construction.

saint for rent –  glorious, moving pictures.  no really, it’s “semi-animated”  and sehr sehr gut.  about an inn for time travelers.

Judecca – murky colored fantasy world.  grim, and beautiful in the insidious way that makes you attached to a character after a couple pages.

Ava’s Demon – glorious, glowing color.  I really like the one cell at a time delivery, it makes paging through the story like a reading a book.  it also makes waiting for the next bit really really difficult.

nimona – is hilarious and with unique styling.  Hilarious!

water –  great big hook of a beginning and wonderfully executed brushy style.

shambles – not really sure where it’s going yet, but it is beautifully done.  I always admire people who can wield color so well.

Spera – an enormous collaborative comic with artists from all over.

Over on the 24-hour comics day blog the 24-Hour Comics Day 2013 date announced.  It is October 5th.  I love the spontaneity of dreaming up a comic and executing it in one day.  It is a trial, but I love what I’ve come up with so far.  I’m already looking forward to it.

My first:  Death goes to Octoberfest

Last year:  Nightmare

Levi Levi and the Time Machine

All right kiddies.  Levi Levi and the Time Machine will be posting on the Bean on Thursdays starting tomorrow.  It’s got bold new styling.  It’s got a fantabulous story.  It tests the boundaries of time and space and natural aging.  It’s got back story.  And, it’s got a cameo by my friend Micah.

It looked interesting and after clicking through a few pages I started from the beginning and then I couldn’t stop.  I couldn’t stop watching Stupid Snake – Wordless Graphic Novel.  It is a lovely web comic.

Check back during the day for the rest of the comic as it comes out of my head.

24 hour comics day is coming!

24 hour comics day is coming!  I need to come up with an idea – though, of course, nothing more than an idea.  The challenge is to plan, draw, and finish a 24 page comic in 24 hours.  There can be no story written, no layouts sketched, nothing until the big day.  How it’s finished is up to the artist.  I did my usual last year (pencil sketches inked with a grey pallet).  I’m trying to decide if I’m up for that this year.  I can still remember how my shoulder felt afterwards.  Why must I mouse and draw with the same hand?

Since I’m doing the challenge from home I will be posting updates and comic pages as I go this Saturday.  Thank goodness I finally have a correct installation of webcomic (is, by the by, a fabulous comic displaying wordpress plugin, with which my recent trials were probably all my fault).

Emmi Gennis has been previewing the mysterious stories that will be featured in the Hic & Hoc  unsolved mysteries anthology.  There are some fantastic and promising pages for this book – I’m looking forward to getting my hands on it.

I suppose I’m kind of dissapointed too, since Graham Kahler’s submission means I missed the boat again.  But you know what that means!  You get to read the thing here, yes you do.  So keep your eyes peeled forThe Lighthousemen of Eilean Mor.  I’ll give you a heads up too – when it’s posting.

Meanwhile, click on the pic to see Emmi Gennis’ blog and check out the other cool comic artists included in the upcoming anthology.

Sigh

I upgraded my webcomic installation and it stalled (perhaps because of the network I’m on or what else I was doing at the time).  So now, all the links to my comics are 404s.  All the pages are still there in my site, so I’ll get this settled sometime soon.

Guess it’s good that I was ending stuff up.  All the new comics will be fresh starts….and thinking of that.  I created a networked wordpress to test some work stuff.  Now that I have it, I could give some of my comics their own blogs – you know, instead of having them running in the back of my blog and showing up mixed in the rss feed.  I dunno.  Is this a good idea?  I have a couple of stories that I know are going to continue and grow…

Stuff to think on.

Broken pages.

I’ve talked about Faith Erin Hicks before when I raved over her comic Friends with Boys.  She’s got a new one online now as a collaboration with Prudence Shen, author of Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong.  You can read the webcomic as it airs by going to Page 001 | Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong.

I am crazy excited about this.  And, and, and,

Hey, have ya heard about Jason Turner’s Page 100 Project, where in he, and other comic artists, illustrated page 100 of whatever book they liked/were reading?  Sounds like something I’d like huh?  So I did it too.  Only my reading either wasn’t a story – like Mark Twain’s Christian Science, or it was junk food.  I’ll keep these up as I go…..The Hundredth page 001 | The LeEMS Bean.

Are you ready for Inktober?

Inktober is coming – a month long celebration of artists drawing in ink.  I’ve happily watched through a couple years of Jake Parker’s Inktobers and seen other artists I follow fall in line with brush and pen.  This will be the first year I give it a try.  No pencils, no erasers, just ink on paper, a drawing a day, all October long.  Even on 24 hour comics Day October 20th.  So keep your fingers crossed for me and check back.  Check back everyday.  🙂
